{"id":3034,"date":"2015-09-19T17:12:44","date_gmt":"2015-09-19T15:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/e-spectations.com\/swimming\/?page_id=3034"},"modified":"2022-03-31T11:51:58","modified_gmt":"2022-03-31T10:51:58","slug":"childhood-cancer-awareness","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/e-spectations.com\/swimming\/swim-mom\/childhood-cancer-awareness\/","title":{"rendered":"Childhood cancer awareness"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Childhood Cancer Awareness<\/h2>\n<div id=\"attachment_3051\" style=\"width: 810px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3051\" class=\"wp-image-3051 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/e-spectations.com\/swimming\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/5_goldInSeptember.jpg\" alt=\"100 ribbons for cancer\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-3051\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monica with her team mates at Junior Champs 2017 wearing Childhood cancer awareness ribbons &#8211; from left to right Bailey Forrest, Dayna Graham, Alia Khan, Poppy Dixon, Monica Botha<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Childhood cancer awareness is something that is very close to our hearts.&nbsp; Monica battled with chronic pneumonia since birth.&nbsp; At the age of two, she was tested for all possible causes of this condition, including cancer.&nbsp; The waiting period for this type of testing is very stressful and I, as a mom, cannot imagine what it must be like to learn that your child has cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Monica tested negative for any cancer and related childhood illnesses.&nbsp; The experience, however, does stay with a person.&nbsp; I clearly remember the day Monica went for a cat scan.&nbsp; She was into Dinosaurs at that stage.&nbsp; We told her that she is going to travel to Dinosaur land and back.&nbsp; The nurse played along and gave her some Dinosaur stickers when the scan completed.<\/p>\n<p>It really helps to make a very scary situation less scary when you distract a small child&#8217;s attention with make-believe.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013 our paediatrician concludes that Monica is an asthmatic.&nbsp; We start preventative treatment, as asthma mostly seems to be the cause of all Monica&#8217;s illness.&nbsp; We refuse to give up and discuss swimming as a sport with our paediatrician, Dr. John.&nbsp; She confirms that it will be a good idea for Mica to swim as it will strengthen her lungs and build lung capacity.<\/p>\n<p>We find a club and a coach for Monica in January 2013.&nbsp; By September, Monica swims 25 meters on her own, and we enter her for her <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/OoFb2eYH-n8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first fun gala<\/a><\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/beatcc.org\/monica-botha\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3592 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/e-spectations.com\/swimming\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/08\/Grow-Gold.jpg\" alt=\"Contribute to G9 \" width=\"306\" height=\"165\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>How did we find Gold in September?<\/h3>\n<p>September is Spring in South Africa.&nbsp; It is also the month in which we swim our local 13 and Under Junior Championship, which earmarks the opening of the swimming season.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<pre><em><strong>We support Gold in September as \nthis non-profit raise funds for \nmuch needed research with the \ngoal to develop new treatments \nfor childhood cancer which, \nultimately may lead to cures or \neven prevention of cancer in \nchildren.<\/strong><\/em><\/pre>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>2015:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1519\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1519\" class=\"wp-image-1519\" src=\"https:\/\/e-spectations.com\/swimming\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/12\/KZNJnrChamps2015_800x600-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Childhood cancer awareness 2015\" width=\"350\" height=\"263\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-1519\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monica pledges all her races to Childhood cancer awareness in 2015<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gold in September runs a Facebook campaign raising childhood cancer awareness.&nbsp; We read the family&#8217;s story and are really touched by it, as we can relate to the whole experience.<\/p>\n<p>Monica is homeschooled, and we decide that she should show support.&nbsp; We cannot donate any money at that stage, but she <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/F5vr6ZETVXQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>pledges her races<\/strong><\/em><\/a> at KZN Junior Champs to Gold in September to raise awareness for the project.<\/p>\n<p>Monica wins all her events,&nbsp; the Victrix Ludorum trophy and the top Female 8 and Under trophy.<\/p>\n<p>It is amazing to create awareness through a simple act of kindness. This project&nbsp;is a perfect fit for the PACES curriculum she uses in home-schooling (Accelerated Christian Education).<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<\/p><h4><em><strong>Gold ribbons for Childhood cancer awareness in 2016 and 2017:<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_3047\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3047\" class=\"wp-image-3047\" src=\"https:\/\/e-spectations.com\/swimming\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2018\/05\/cutting-ribbons-300x297.jpg\" alt=\"Childhood cancer awareness ribbons\" width=\"350\" height=\"347\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-3047\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monica cuts the ribbon and seals the ends while mom sews on pins and beads<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 2016 and 2017 we decided to do a bit more to create childhood cancer awareness at Junior Champs.&nbsp; We shop around for some gold satin ribbon to make ribbons for swimmers to wear.<\/p>\n<p>Mica and Mom make 100 ribbons to hand out at Junior Champs to create awareness.&nbsp; Mica cuts and seals the ribbons, while mom helps by sewing pins and gold beads onto the ribbons.<\/p>\n<p>At the gala, so many people share their own or others&#8217; experiences with childhood cancer.&nbsp; It is very touching to see how the project grows and the amount of support and awareness it raises.<\/p>\n<p>Our swim friends offer to pay for the ribbons on more than one occasion, however, we do not accept.&nbsp; Gold in September is not a South African initiative.&nbsp; If we do raise money, it will be very little when it reaches the United States due to the Rand Dollar exchange rate and bank charges.<\/p>\n<p>We prefer for now to just make ribbons, hand it out and show that in September every year, we are grateful for a healthy swimmer and that we care for the kids that are suffering from cancer.
