Childhood cancer awareness – growing Gold in September 2018<\/p><\/div>\n

September is not just Spring in South Africa, but also the month in which we swim KZN Junior Champs and support Gold in September<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Gold in September (G9) is a Wisconsin based non-profit organization. They raise funds to support researchers in their quest to find a cure for childhood cancer.<\/p>\n

Let’s take a look at how the idea grew since we first used a Twibbon\u00a0frame on Facebook in 2016.\u00a0 We start with our current plan, working back to the 2015-2016 season.<\/p>\n

This year, we decided that we want to step up our effort and include some fundraising.\u00a0 There is, however, a challenge.<\/p>\n

Last\u00a0year our supporters offered to donate some money for the ribbons.\u00a0 Let’s do some maths:<\/p>\n

Suppose we make 200 ribbons and get ZAR 5-00 per ribbon, it will give us R 1,000-00.
\nZAR 1,000-00, at an exchange rate of R 13,41 (at the time of this writing) to the US Dollar, will give us USD 74,55.
\nDeduct bank charges from that, and our contribution will become very small.<\/p>\n

Time to put on our thinking caps.\u00a0 The best way around this math problem would be to find someone in the United States to raise funds.\u00a0 This way, USD stays USD and we do not have to account for the exchange rate and bank charges.<\/p>\n

Our search starts\u00a0online.\u00a0 The only swimmers we know in the United States that are the same Age as Monica\u00a0is the Negrin Family. Paula is also 11 and her brother Axel, is 9. We contact them\u00a0and explain our predicament.<\/p>\n

Without hesitation, the family agrees to help and we introduce Paula and Axel’s mom, Monica Gomez, to the Gold in September team.\u00a0 The best way to raise funds and create awareness in a fun way\u00a0is for Paula and Axel to host Penny Wars at their schools.\u00a0 Our plan is to host the penny wars when Monica swims KZN Junior Champs, scheduled for 21-23 September.<\/p>\n

Raising funds this way will maximize our effort and we will reach more school-going learners.\u00a0 Therefore, increased awareness and more support for the G9 project<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0We are very excited about our plan for this year.<\/p>\n
